3 Ways to Move Your Body Without Working Out

Stop struggling with sticking to a workout plan or getting to the gym.

Are you eager to get out of the house and into the sunshine for some Vitamin D therapy while engaging your muscles? If you are ready to take back control of your energy and fully engage in your favorite activities, try these 3 easy ways to get your workout in every day, without the gym or screen! The possibilities are endless!

1. Take your dog for an early morning or evening jog/walk! I love walking my dog, Harper, in the nearby park overlooking Lake Washington here on Mercer Island, Washington. Not only is this beneficial for losing weight and boosting your mood, but this fast-paced physical activity will do exactly what a treadmill at the gym will do, tone and strengthen your muscles. On the plus side, you’re getting fresh air and your dog is enjoying the physical activity as well! No dog? Walk with a friend!

2. Plant a garden. Whether container, raised bed, or in-ground, gardening provides a full body workout all season long. Cultivating the soil, planting seeds or plants, watering, weeding, and harvesting get you moving outdoors while you literally reap the benefits of beautiful flowers and nutritious homegrown veggies. It’s a win-win!

3. Volunteer at a humane society or with your local park or beach cleanup! Nothing will get you up and moving more than volunteering for an hour or two outdoors! Oftentimes, the parks and local organizations seek volunteers for assistance with cleanup and maintaining the surroundings! These are just a few examples of volunteer opportunities you can pursue!

Becoming active in your community is a great place to start! At-home virtual workouts, Pilates, and yoga videos are other ways to move your body, no gym is needed. Plus, there are thousands of free options to be found on YouTube for any fitness or experience level. With the good weather, check to see if there are any outdoor yoga or boot camp classes you can join. Eating healthy, getting enough sleep, and staying hydrated is important to remember while getting your exercise. Without proper hydration, you risk dehydration and ensure your organs don’t go into overdrive.

Just because you don’t have access to a gym, that doesn’t mean you can’t get your physical activity in for the day to instantly boost your energy. With a little motivation and determination to find the right activity for you, you’re on your way to a fitter, healthier lifestyle without the gym!
